Ruggedisation specialist Blazepoint has won a further order for ruggedised servers for the programme under which Fujitsu is supplying BAE with deployable IT infrastructures for the Typhoon F2 multi-role combat aircraft.
Blazepoint, which has already applied its advanced ruggedisation technology to the provision of large servers, will now be supplying miniaturised versions of the equipment. The new Ndura RUGGED® servers are available in 2U or 3U, compared with the 14U height of the previous models.
The servers, which Fujitsu supplies as COTS equipment, are stripped and rebuilt into rugged, shock mounted light alloy chassis that are then fitted into alloy transport cases. Manufactured to a very high standard, these alloy cases are specially designed to dissipate heat. Under the next stage of the programme, Blazepoint will build additional rugged servers for desktop deployment as further aircraft are built.
The infrastructures, which run support systems essential to the aircraft’s operation, will be deployed with UK, German, Italian and Spanish aircraft.
Blazepoint’s Selwyn Petterson said: “The Ndura RUGGED® servers will carry a very large amount of essential data and it is vitally important that they are able to operate across the entire spectrum of environments, however hostile these may be. To create the required level of ruggedisation we employ a combination of design skills, the innovative use of technology and extremely rigorous testing regimes. Our processes range from high-tech test cells to 8-metre drops onto solid concrete.”
Based at Chalgrove, Oxford, Blazepoint supplies UK MoD and other leading military customers with Ndura RUGGED® products. The product range includes ruggedised mobile computing, displays and printers, all based on COTS equipment. The company is a supplier to the BOWMAN programme, while every Royal Navy ship afloat carries Blazepoint ruggedised equipment.
